The Challenge:

Create the social media buzz to support the launch promotion for a new Rydges Hotel in Wellington. Rydges ran an exciting promotion to “Live like a VIP” to actively promote the launch of their new hotel in Wellington. The campaign was run primarily as a ‘text-to-win’ competition, with traditional advertising activity including radio, billboards and Adshell.

The Solution

Use Facebook to develop a low-cost viral marketing campaign to support traditional advertising activity and provide an alternative competition entry mechanism to text.

Catalyst90 also provided technical development, designing and building the Facebook landing page for Rydges Wellington to host the online entries into the competition, and technical development of the survey for the client.

Catalyst90 kicked off the viral side of the campaign with a short burst of low cost Facebook advertising, running a targeted campaign for only three days. With a great call to action (winning a valuable prize), minimal promotion was enough to kick-start the viral campaign. From there on in, the social network phenomenon kicked in, spreading the word about the competition through users becoming fans of the competition.

The Results

Catalyst90 delivered another successful Facebook campaign, increasing the likes on the Rydges Wellington Facebook page by a whopping 640%. The most overwhelming and telling result? More than 8 times as many entries to the competition were received via Facebook than through SMS. Users voted, and the results were clear: they overwhelmingly preferred to use Facebook! All at a fraction of the cost!
